Welcome to Unit 9!
Primary care is often the first place of care for patients struggling with symptoms of anxiety and depression. While there are limitations of treatment in primary care, physiological problems must be ruled out. Medications can treat only physiologically-based symptoms, and rational drug selection is the continued focus of this week. Outcome evaluation is always emphasized and we rely on our PMHNP colleagues to support ongoing psychiatric and behavioral health management.Additionally, this week will include the integumentary and dermatological systems. While many medications are topical, there are also systemic treatments. The themes for the unit include the ongoing importance of rational drug selection based on the presentation symptoms.Course Learning Objectives
- Examine the principles of pathophysiology and therapeutics that direct the pharmacotherapeutic interventions for dermatologic and psychiatric conditions (CLO 1)
- Analyze the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic actions of agents used for management of dermatologic and psychiatric conditions (CLO 2)
- Apply the evidence for pharmacotherapeutic interventions in a patient with dermatologic and psychiatric/mental illness or disorders (CLO 1,2)
- Apply critical-thinking processes to the management and evaluation of expected effects and potential adverse effects of pharmacodynamic agents affecting the dermatologic systems and psychiatric mental health (CLO 1,2,3)
- Evaluate the impact of pharmacogenomics, access, cost, quality, and safety on prescribing for Drugs Affecting the dermatologic system and management of psychiatric mental health disorders (CLO 4)

Unit 9: Psychiatric & Dermatologic Pharmacology
Welcome to Unit 9!
In this unit, we’ll talk about psychiatric and dermatologic pharmacology. Primary care often deals with patients facing anxiety and depression symptoms. We need to rule out physiological issues before considering treatment. Medications can help with physiologically-based symptoms, and we’ll focus on choosing the right drugs this week. We’ll also emphasize evaluating outcomes and collaborate with PMHNP colleagues for ongoing mental health management.
Additionally, we’ll cover the skin and dermatological systems. Some medications are applied to the skin, while others are taken internally. We’ll keep in mind the importance of choosing the right drugs based on the symptoms presented.
Course Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the principles of pathophysiology and therapeutics guiding pharmacotherapeutic interventions for dermatologic and psychiatric conditions.
